The uniquely uncluttered black backdrops,
free of advertising or any signage, found
amongst the hundreds of New York
subway platforms allowed for formal
studies to be made of the common
experience of waiting for the train.

This considered approach enables
the more theatrical qualities of these
anonymous portraits engaged in an
everyday moment to emerge.

“to transform the subway from its dark,
degrading and impersonal reality into
the images that open up our experience
again to the color, sensuality and vitality
of the individual souls that ride it daily.”

Bruce Davidson.
